چکیده
This paper presents a short-term analysis of recent timber trends in China, focusing on timber markets and trade, and on forest-related policies. Firstly, trends in China’s timber supply and demand are described highlighting the sharp increase in log imports, especially from Russia. Secondly, the key policy trends that have a#ected China’s domestic timber market, including trade policy, forest conservation programmes, forest certification, land tenure and tax reforms, are outlined. Subsequently, the current state of Sino-Russia timber trade is surveyed, with special reference to the significant market growth in value-added ‘made in China’ wood products based on imported Russian timber. Finally, the prospects of the timber market in China and the problems facing Sino-Russian trade are discussed.

Palaeoecological evidence is used to investigate climatic and anthropogenic drivers of vegetation and fire dynamics through the past ~1200 years in the Eastern Arc Mountains, Tanzania. Pollen and charcoal analyses are supported by a chronology derived from five accelerator mass spectrometry ages, a 137Cs activity profile and marker horizons from two exotic pollen taxa. Pollen indicator taxa are...
